Who hasn't heard of ukay?
|

|
|
| It's this huge pile of
second-hand clothes that people rummage through (make halukay in colegiala speak) for cheap finds. Not only has it become a survival strategy in this straitened times, it has also become politically correct. Why dump more chemicals into waterways to dye and manufacture textile for new clothes when there are lots of
previously owned wardrobe just waiting to be claimed?
With ukay shops becoming as ubiquitous as Paris Hilton, it has become fashionable even among the perfumed set. After all, ukay mounds have been known to yield designer clothes and the
collectible castoffs of the rich and famous. Read

The
Ukay*Ukay Phenomenon
Call it vintage... Call it classic....Here in the Philippines, it's fondly known as
Ukay*Ukay or U2.
We're talking about second-hand clothes, shoes, and bags. |
| Before, we used to say "second-hand" with embarrassment. Nowadays, when you would ask a Filipino where he got his retro-looking polo, he would say "I got it from an
Ukay*Ukay" with pride. |
|
Why is it popular here? For one thing, one can find one-of-a-kind pieces that could not be seen anywhere else (perfect for fashionistas).
More importantly, it's cheap! My cousin got an authentic pair of Versace jeans for Php150 (around
US$3). My mom got me a black Oroton bag and a sturdy brown leather tote for Php50 (USD1) a piece.

Dress
comfortably but look simple - If possible.... look
poor!

Do not speak English at all costs. You will soon realize that things cost more if you speak English or speak Tagalog with a twang.
|
|
» |
Bring lots of change. Do not pay using large bills. It would be to your disadvantage if you appear to have lots of money.
|
|
» |
Have lots
and lots of patience. Browse through all racks - You
might miss out on a great item if you don’t!
|
|
» |
Bring a large plastic
(shopping bag) so both hands are free to browse through the racks
& ready to grab the interesting items.
|
|
» |
Buy items on the
spot - Chances are they might not be there the next time you come
back!
|
|
» |
Do not make the mistake of asking if they have
sizes, at all!
|
|
» |
Grab the items you want and do not let go till you get to the cashier even if you are unsure about
them - The moment you let go of an item, somebody might just be waiting
to grab it; if that should happens…sigh...…let go
and never get into a fight. Once you let go, its up for
grabs - That's Shopping Etiquette!

Haggle
and ..... haggle some more. Bargain for the lowest
prices!
|
|

Lastly: Soak used clothes in hot water
& wash thoroughly to rid of any dirt and musty smell....and
avoid infections.

A
fabulous three-story Ukay*Ukay store in
Quiapo is now closed. This is also where
I found a beautiful black leather bag
for only P200 and a long-sleeved Morgan
de Toi shirt priced at P40. This store
was also a favorite of designer Puey Quiñones. |

There’s
another Ukay*Ukay near the corner of
West Avenue and Quezon Boulevard that
offers great bargains on merchandise
that would cost you thousands if you buy
them brand new. A child’s Laura Ashley
dress for PHP30, an Episode cocktail
dress for PHP40 and an exquisite lace
skirt also for PHP40. |

The
stores near Blumentrit Street along España
have unique and reasonably priced shoes
and bags. If you’re a bag lady who has
to have a purse in every color, this is
the place for you. If there is anything
second-hand that I still can’t bear to
wear, those are shoes but the Blumentrit
stores have cute stack-heeled Maryjanes
that look like Pradas at only P400
- price negotiable as usual. |
